Beyond the Book List: Deepening the Leadership Conversation

Why “What Are You Reading?” Isn’t Enough

Over the years, I’ve frequently found myself in conversations about leadership, both with colleagues and aspiring leaders. One of the most common questions I hear is, “What leadership books are you reading?” It’s a thoughtful inquiry—after all, books have a unique power to inspire, challenge, and shape our perspectives. I’m always happy to share my latest reads or recommend a few of my all-time favorites. My bookshelf is filled with titles by renowned leadership experts, insightful articles, and even a few unconventional gems that have broadened my views.

The Limitations of Book Recommendations

While sharing book recommendations can spark interest and motivate others to pick up a new title, I’ve noticed that the conversation often stops there. Too often, it’s nothing more than an exchange of titles, leading to an ever-growing reading list. Rarely do we pause to discuss how these books have impacted us, what lessons we’ve put into practice, or how our leadership philosophies have evolved as a result. There’s so much more value to be found in going deeper than just the titles and authors.

Moving Beyond the Surface

What if, instead of simply sharing what we’re reading, we started talking about what we’re learning? Imagine the possibilities if we asked follow-up questions like, “How did that book change your approach to leading a team?” or “What’s one concept you’ve actually implemented from your recent reads?” These questions open the door to richer, more meaningful conversations—ones that foster growth, accountability, and real-world impact.
