Embracing the Balance: Humility and Self-Advocacy in Leadership
How Sharing My Story Helped Me Grow and Inspire Others

The Struggle Between Humility and Self-Advocacy
I’m sharing something personal today that I believe many leaders will relate to—the challenge of balancing humility and self-advocacy. Throughout my career and personal development journey, I’ve grappled with the notion that being humble is an essential trait for effective leadership. Yet, I’ve also discovered that excessive humility can sometimes become a barrier to growth and recognition. This internal struggle isn’t unique to me; it’s a common thread among those who strive to lead with integrity while also wanting to be seen and heard.
When Humility Holds Us Back
Over the years, I’ve realized that being overly humble can sometimes hold us back. This tendency showed up in job interviews, in how I responded to praise, and even in the way I told my own story. I often found myself deflecting compliments or downplaying my achievements, believing it was the right thing to do. But in reality, I was minimizing my own value and missing opportunities to advocate for myself and my ideas. In crucial moments—like interviews or leadership meetings—this habit made it difficult for others to fully see my capabilities and contributions.
Owning and Sharing My Story
With this new perspective, I now share my journey openly and intentionally, whether it’s on the Built Different podcast with Quintel Harcum or in other spaces. Opening up about the challenges I’ve faced and the lessons I’ve learned hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been incredibly rewarding. By owning my story, I’ve been able to connect with others on a deeper level and encourage those who may be struggling with similar issues. My story is meant to inspire and uplift others. My story is for His glory!
Encouragement for Fellow Leaders
If you find yourself wrestling with the balance between humility and self-advocacy, know that you’re not alone. It’s possible to remain grounded and authentic while also confidently sharing your gifts and experiences with the world. In fact, your unique journey could be the very thing someone else needs to hear today. Don’t be afraid to step into the spotlight—not for personal gain, but to inspire, empower, and glorify a purpose greater than yourself.
Final Thoughts
Leadership is a continual journey of growth and self-discovery. By learning to balance humility with self-advocacy, we not only advance our own paths but also pave the way for others to do the same. Let’s continue to share our stories, lift each other up, and lead with both grace and confidence.
